I like it overall, but I think the navi needs a bit more padding (the green bar navi) and it's quite hard to read the black writing, perhaps try white?

just tried.. it looked horrible. ill try lightening the brown...
*edit* ok, i played around. ill lighten it a bit. could everyone please check the page with the 'lighter brown' style sheet (find it in View > Page Style in firefox) and say whether it is better. pretend the separator is still there. __________________________________ |

I love the banner.

The grey makes the red look a bit harsh, hmm, quite a predicament! How about a darkish blue from the header, such as #103662 - I tested that with Firebug and it doesn't look bad, but could use tinkering!

Oh I see. How about the orange of the sun? Doesn't look bad but washes out the footer and nav bar colours slightly. Or the grey from the inner shadow of the clouds? However that looks a bit flat.

I wouldn't call it awesome, but it's nice. The background is too dark and the navigation needs styling. I love the header though.

I don't get a brown background. The background I get is more of a blood red and I've checked it on a few different computers... that may be why I have a different opinion. I do agree with you though, the way the header stands out is amazing.

ok, the brown has been scrapped due to overwhelming demand.
the menu and footer bars have been sexified to the extreme. if you dont cry from joy when you see it now, you are a heartless robot. (what do you think?) __________________________________ |

I'm not so sure about it...to me the colors don't go too well together, and a lot of things look rushed.
One thing's for sure though, at least the content background needs to be lightened or something. __________________________________ |

I think I'm a heartless robot. Though I don't know how I got past the CAPTCHA screen...
The problem is, you've started with a vibrant, bright header, and then gone into your usual dark colour scheme, which is setting the colours off-balance, making it hard on the eye. Try to stay away from that, and make the rest of the layout bright and vibrant as well so the reader isn't forced to look up at the header the whole time because it's the most visually pleasing thing about the whole layout. __________________________________ |

Content area is impossible to read. And the use of read, small-caps header text on a dark blue background is beyond me.
But it's a good start. I like the header and navigation. It just looks unfinished. __________________________________ |

Mkay, I was bored. Took 2 mins, and here's what I came up with?
It's sort of darkish.. (Which you like) yet light. And Iiii think it fits in a bit more? You guys, mightn't like it. But I prefer it. I think it's better on the eyes. One word: clashy.
Although the original concept kicked ass, you ruined it completely by going for a serif font on a disgusting background, as well as that toxic green you're using too. Try going for a nicer font for headings and a lighter background. Hell, I'd use white.. you can still incorporate some grunge into it, as you seem to want to (hence the title..) Oh btw, my mum isn't a perfectly nice woman. __________________________________ |
