Hey!

Hey everybody, I'm Mike (in case you haven't already gathered). I live in the UK and like to try and create little websites for things to do when I'm bored. I've never really spent much time looking deep into website development but hope to during my free time. Apart from that I am really keen at learning PHP (which I struggle to find the best place to start - btw I know the very basics). For example I attempt to write a PHP script of my own, get stuck half way through then just throw the towel in because I can't understand what to do.Anyway, enough of me. You can expect to see me posting fairly regularly on here, and I have to say the site is wonderful :)Cya around,Mike

Bravenet! They HAD a great site, but a recent bug on said site has made it to where you can't get on to edit your hosted page, or create another site. Well, with FireFox and Opera. I don't know if it happens in IE, since I abandoned it. Bottom line: Bravenet SUX!

Creating a CMS

Hello guys! After easter, we are going to start on a PHP/MySQL project in school. I was thinking that I want to make some simple CMS. I've already tried creating a simple forum that works pretty good. The CMS would then have some functions for writing news, adding new pages with text and perhaps some files page with downloads. And also some way to make it work with templates/skins or whatever so that I can use it with many sites. So, I wonder if you have any useful tips for me to keep in mind when I make it. Like, what is a good way to design the MySQL tables? Thanks(Didn't know if I should put it in Databases or PHP :P)

Sorry guys...

Dear visitors,I'm sorry there have been no updates to the site recently. Truth be told I've lost the enthusiasm for web development sites as I don't have the time to write tutorials endlessly anymore. It was fun using this site as a way to self teach myself about all the cool stuff, but now I'm using those skills to do things that are even cooler and aren't generic (as in my opinion there are too many tutorial sites out there now)I'm really not sure whether it's worth finishing this site off at the moment - as far as it's concerned it's on an indefinite hiatus in terms of completion. However with the encouragement, I could see it becoming something. On the bright side, I definitely plan on keeping some sort of community running here. Many people are happy with the forums I've built, so I'm looking to creating a better version of those to end up running on the domain if "all else fails"..Hoping you enjoy the monkey on your dashboard,Will

It is giving me an headache

Hey guys,A few days ago I came up with a pretty simple, yet colorful design for my soon to be website.Only thing that is missing is my lack of CSS and xHTML skills, I've read a dozen of tutorials already but I think I keep missing the point. I've already sliced a few bits and pieces (top leftcorner, topborder, top rightcorner, logo, navbar etc) but it doesn't seem to get me anywhereThis is my design: http://www.joshuaboyd.nlCould someone help me out, give me a gentle push in the right direction, or something like that? Thanks a lot,JoshuaThe Netherlands

The Present?

So this place has kinda gone downhill. I'm not sure why, but it obviously has. Was just curious as to what everyone is up to now-a-days.As for me, I've been pretty much just hanging out and living. Nothing special really. Was never very good at the web design/development thing but I'm still doing little things in my spare time. What are you all up to?

A Downloads page

Hello guys!My friend and I have a site together, where we make small programs in Visual Basic. Currently, when we have made a new program we have to manually make a new html page for each program. So I want to make the site a little more dynamic, for example having an admin page where you can upload a program, write a description and stuff for it, and then have it automatically added to the Downloads page, and making a subpage for it.You can see what it looks like here: http://www.apayostudios.com/downloads.phpIf you click on any of the programs, you see that all pages look the same, except the text on it, and that's how I want it to look still. (Maybe a downloads counter too :P)Anyways, I currently have no skills in PHP (but I'm going to learn some in school this year), so I wondered if you guys could help me out somehow. I've been looking around at the internet for some tutorial/source code, but I haven't found any that does what I want. Thanks, poe.(Had to rewrite the whole message cause my friend sent a link that messed up my window so I had to ctrl-alt-del... Probably forgot something now.)edit: Oh yeah, the site is kinda made for Firefox, since I don't have IE so I haven't really been able to make it work for both.

Customizing small business website design

When a website gets customized the very first thing it does is to give the site an intuitive informational reclamation. This is how the mark of authenticity comes in the reputation of the web site and the brand. The job is to organizing the information on the website pages. In a Small business website design it helps in improving the users' practice to explore the site. It is a means of the chief feature of a truly customized website, no matter whether it is small or big. Some major investigations in this field have shown that an efficient half a minute information reclamation by a new visitor to a website will influence the outlook of the visitor to search the website for some extra time. It also specifies that the visitor will also seek services from the specific company with all reliability. In a small business this reliability is of great importance for launching sites of e-commerce services. The various forms of information that create an identity for all kinds of internet business can be of any kind. It can be graphical, printed or auditory irrespective of whether services or products are of big or small scale. One should carefully appraise the points in support of and against of incorporating auditory information before he choose to go for it.It is very necessary to customize the Small business website design, for better responses. The exchange of information between the website and visitor is to have the website made available to vast majority of the viewers' monitor resolutions on various search browsers. These search browsers make the connection easy and convenient. Most of the time it has been found that, many visitors often turn away just by the display of resolutions. They do not even go for the main page if they find it inapt to their monitor. Thus the recommended resolution is 1024x768 or higher. It has been determined after a keen research. The research states that almost all the monitors of personal computers are set in this particular 1024x768 resolution or higher. Yet it should be also so optimized that other users can also use the site. At the same time, one can very smartly apply color and graphics on the websites to entice interests and considerations to important services’ information or links on the website. Thus the process of customization is very important to reach more and more customers. Mod Edit: Links removed. Blatant spam.

Download music off MySpace

Well I've seen a few comments about how people get music off MySpace so I thought I might share it with you.http://mediaservices.myspace.com/services/media/musicplayerxml.ashx?b=<band_artist_here>Replace <band_artist_here> with the friendid of your band. Instead you could just go ahead and add a bookmark in Firefox which gives you a nice prompt for it:javascript:var bandid = prompt('Enter MySpace Band ID');document.location.href = 'http://mediaservices.myspace.com/services/media/musicplayerxml.ashx?b='+bandid;Please no linking. Wrap all MySpace related URLs in code tags as you would on a "special" forum.

I installed leopard the other day (rocks btw, still has some bugs in it). But I went to partition the drive, thinking it would keep the data (I guess i need to read more), and it formatted my HD, I lost EVERYTHING I had on that comp. Including My Website, A site Monitor Project and a super secret project (sorry, can't tell, yet), A Database Editor Project (never got far). I Lost all the PSD's and Coding, oh and about 50 realbasic projects, one of which I had spent about 4 months on.So, I have photoshop re-installed, and some plain apps that I need, and, I am now re-designing my website (different look, needs lots of work though...)Anyone care to share their horror stories?

i need a new, less process intensive way of logging hotlinks.at the moment im loading the image into a php document using filegetcontent, logging it to mysql, and then printing it (with headers and all).is there a better way to do this? perhaps use .htaccess to open a php file for every image file opened and log the information?its for imageho.st... is it unrealistic for me to want to record the file views? should i allow direct hotlinking instead of faking it through a proxy php script?id really appreciate any help you can give.

Army Interview

Okay so this was category was empty so I just decided to tell you about it. :DWelll, I'd done the medical. Got ma balls felt by an old woman, BOOYAH! And also had to swaddle down like a duck etc etc.. And I'd been to the Job Orientation & Evaluation Day (Just figuring out which role you think you wanna apply for) .. And I also had done all the paper work and reading, psych test, more forms to fill out etc etc etc.. And then came the Interview. So I walked into the room after I was called up and entered (Err..) and didn't know what to do. I figured it was going to be some old bloke (So I was going to shake his hand).. But it was an old lady! Aha.. And so she pretty much just started firing questions away, not saying Hello.. or Shaking hands. Just started out with "How do your family feel about you joining the military" .. "Are you in a relationship" "What is the main role of the job your applying for" "Why do you want to join the military" "For how long have you wanted too..". It was insane I was gettin grilled O.o I feel sorry for the dudes that have been in there, and are going to go in there. And well after all the basic questions apparently I didn't give sufficient answers to most. So she's all "Tell me for 5 minutes why I should let you in" And, ahem.. That bit was easy :DHaha. Anyway, I'm in if I pass my Hearing test and my Eye Sight test. Which I've done now, just gotta wait to find out the FAX # to send the results off and if they are good enough.. I'm in. I'll be over in iraq. WOOOO!! Lol jokes jokes.. Sorry to waste your time if you found
